Since I am over halfway through my education here in New York I thought it was about time with a blog post like this. I often get questions about what I study here in New York, how I finance my studies, my living situation etc. I have put together a Q&A to answer all of your questions about anything related to my education in Fashion Marketing.
What exactly are you studying?
I am taking a Master of Professional Studies in Fashion Marketing, which basically means that it’s a Master with an internship included. It is a one-year top-up as a BA-degree takes four years in the U.S.
Why LIM College?
I knew I wanted to study something in the field of the business of fashion. For that reason I had my eye on Parsons The New School, FIT and LIM. I mainly ended up going with LIM because their tuition fee is lower than its main competitors’. It’s quite a small school and consists of three campuses in Midtown Manhattan
What are the admissions requirements? English test, recommendations etc?
First of all, I had to sign up with WES – the World Education Services and pay a fee for them to evaluate my Danish transcripts and find out what level I was entitled to study (in this case a graudate degree). Since I am an international student an English proficiency test was a requirement as well. I did the TOEFL test which I’ll talk more about in a post later on. I had to do an essay, send my transcripts, diplomas and recommendations from previous employers and professors. You can read more about the admissions requirements here.
When would you have to apply? How long is the process?
Personally, I think the application process was long. So many papers had to be sent to different places and forwarded to others who would approve them. Quite a challenge to make everyone work together. But after submitting my application it only about a week’s time before I got my acceptance letter. It’s all the work that goes before that takes forever, as you have to go through WES and TOEFL before you can submit all the necessary material. After that it’s the whole visa application process which can also be quite lengthy.
How is the age range when studying a graduate degree?
I think for the most part the people taking their master’s at LIM are around 23-24 years old. Some are obviously a bit younger and then we are some in our late twenties and a couple that’s over 30. It’s my impression that people older than that have mainly chosen to take their degree online.
Stay tuned for the second part of my Q&A where I focus on the classes, the level and the quality of the school.
